How to download YouTube videos
The mechanics are simple. The parts worth knowing are what to do when the quality you expected isn't there, and why some tools hand back a file with no sound.
- Copy the watch, Shorts or playlist URL — all three work
- Above 720p, video and audio are separate streams that must be merged
- If a resolution isn't listed, the uploader never published it
On desktop
Copy the URL from the address bar, paste it into the tool, and press Fetch. You'll get the title, the length, and every rung the video actually publishes with its file size. Pick one and it saves to your Downloads folder.
On a phone
Tap Share under the video, then Copy link, and paste that into the field. The flow is identical — no app to install. On iOS the file lands in Files; on Android, in Downloads, from where your gallery will usually pick it up.
When the resolution you want is missing
Open the quality menu on YouTube itself. Whatever the ceiling is there is the ceiling everywhere, because that's what was uploaded. Nothing can honestly reconstruct detail that was never recorded.
Why some downloads are silent
YouTube serves high-resolution video and its audio as two separate streams. Tools that grab only the video stream produce a silent file. The fix is muxing the two back together, which happens here automatically — you never see the step.
